Former MP Adwoa Safo has revealed how the NPP sidelined her in Parliament and explains why she refused to vote for the E-Levy, citing concerns from her constituents.

Former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has opened up about the alleged maltreatment she endured from her own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during her last two years in Parliament.

In an interview with Asempa FM on March 18, 2025, Adwoa Safo disclosed how she was removed as Deputy Majority Leader and subsequently pushed to the backbench, a move she described as an attempt to humiliate her.

According to her, some members of the NPP in Parliament and the party leadership deliberately sought to tarnish her image.

“Look, it got to a time, in Parliament, we have a certain rule and practice—it has become more like a custom. Someone who has served as a deputy leader before is usually seated right behind the leaders. You can take notice of where Haruna and Muntaka sit. But when I was removed, I was made to sit at the backbench like a newcomer in Parliament.”

She revealed that it was the party’s General Secretary and Majority Whip, who ensured she was moved to the front somewhere.

In the same interview, Adwoa Safo stood by her decision not to vote on the controversial E-Levy bill, which was introduced by the NPP government.

She explained that her opposition to the policy was based on principle and consultations with her constituents, particularly church members in Dome Kwabenya, who warned that the levy would worsen economic hardships.

“I made that principled decision because I knew the E-Levy would not benefit Ghanaians but rather impose more burdens on them.“

Her absence during the E-Levy vote contributed to the majority caucus’ struggle to pass the bill, a move that strained her relationship with the party leadership.

Adwoa Safo’s revelations shed light on the internal struggles within the NPP.
